Visual Studio 2008 Windows Service Tutorial

Overview Introduction to SharePoint Development

When I started learning MOSS 2007, I did not know where start because it is a huge topic to cover. So, I recommend that you download target = "_blank"> Ms. Moss training on your desktop to start and watch the tutorials on the web. This tutorial is useful for beginners to intermediate audience.

Then, the next step is to:

  • Set a SharePoint development environment
  • Installation and configuration of development tools such as Visual Studio, SharePoint Designer and InfoPath

Setting up a development environment

1. Use a Virtual Desktop Environment, I can not emphasize this enough.
I use Virtual PC 2007 (which you can get for free at www.microsoft.com / download, search for Virtual PC 2007), but you can use Microsoft Virtual Server (also free from Microsoft, but it is usually installed on servers cons desktops). You also use a technology non-Microsoft Virtual Machine, there are several there, including Parallels and VMWare. I can not attest to their capabilities, prices, etc., since I do not use them.

2. Install Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 (beta at this writing).
Install it in your virtual desktop environment. The installation instructions vary by product, consult your virtual office instructions for this.

3. Install Windows SharePoint Server 3.0 (WSS 3.0).
You can also get this free from Microsoft, if you have a legal license Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008. You can get this at www.microsoft.com / download, search for "WSS 3.0".

Setting up a development tool

As a developer myself, you can use Visual Studio 2005 with 2007 MOSS. I had to first download and install the following software tools for VS 2005 extension to add:

  • Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows SharePoint Services (WSS)
  • Workflow Foundation Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows
  • Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for. NET Framework 3 (WCF, and WPF)
  • Office SharePoint Server 2007 SDK and ECM Starter Kit

System requirements for all the above extensions to be installed successfully on VS 2005 is that the PC you use for development must have at least the following softawre below. Otherwise there will be excavation around (for me the hard way) if you do not have:

  • Windows Server 2003 OS
  • SharePoint Server 2007

You can also use Visual Studio 2008 with MOSS instead of using VS 2005 and the beauty to the use of VS 2008 is that you don "t need to install additional applications outside because VS 2008 has already SharePoint add-ons and components much more out of the box. Whether or not you use Visual Studio 2008 as I am, or use Visual Studio 2005, most of what you see in this document will work with the exception From

  • How to deploy your solution in Visual Studio 2008 is easier and different from that of Visual Studio 2005 (See this document for steps following: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms460303.aspx).
  • How do you debug your solution in Visual Studio 2008 is easier and different of the Visual Studio 2005 (See document for steps: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms455354.aspx).

Finally, you must download WSS 3.0 SDK, which is basically the help file "for

SharePoint development. You can get the SDK free at www.microsoft.com / Download, search for "WSS 3.0 SDK"

SharePoint development tool

Other tools popular development that I have used and recommend to others in the construction, deployment packaging solutions catering, Backup SharePoint applications are:

  • WAS Builder
  • Deployment Wizard
  • SharePoint Manager
  • Query Builder Camel U2U
